He was a Japanese painter active in the Meiji era.
At the age of 11, he entered the school of Nakajima Raisho, and later studied under Oda Kaisen.
He also admired Maruyama Okyo and became a leading figure of the modern Maruyama School.
He was a professor at the Tokyo Fine Arts School and established the Kawabata School of Art and fostered the next generation of artists,
and was praised along with his colleague Hashimoto Gaho.
