Watanabe Shoei (1873-?)
Born in Osaka in 1873. Common name: Kumajiro.
Studied Shijo School under Shoeki Watanabe.
His age is unknown.

Kasuga-taisha Shrine is located in Kasugano-cho, Nara City, Nara Prefecture, and was built in 768 to protect the Heijo-kyo Capital and to pray for the prosperity of the people, and is dedicated to the Nakatomi and Fujiwara clan deities.
Surrounded by the primeval forest of Kasuga-yama, the shrine grounds are home to approximately 3,000 lanterns that have been dedicated since the Heian period (794-1185). More than a dozen lanterns are depicted in the painting.
