Biography
Tanrei Sochuu (1624–1710)

A Sōtō Zen Buddhist monk of early to mid‑Edo Japan. Born on November 7, 1624, in Wakasa (present‑day Fukui Prefecture), he belonged to the Tanabe family. A disciple of Gesshō Kohaku at Hōen‑ji in Ishikawa, he succeeded his master and served as abbot of the same temple for over 30 years. In later life, he moved to Tamba and founded Jitoku‑ji Temple on Mt. Obi, Kyoto Prefecture. He taught many, including Jissan and Ryūgen, and authored works such as Seppō Myōganron (published in 1668). He passed away on July 16, 1710, at the age of 87.
