He researched both Chinese-style and Japanese-style calligraphy and established a powerful and highly original kana style. He also served at the Imperial Poetry Bureau and held positions including lecturer at Kokugakuin University, academic advisor to the Taito Shodoin, and special member of the institution. His publications include Takakage Hyakushu, Takakage Senshu, and Nihon Shodo Kenkyu.
