Mizutani Honen specialized in paintings of flowers and birds, but among all his works I have seen, this painting of a peacock is by far the finest.

Peacock paintings generally require a great deal of time and effort, no matter the artist. Moreover, the pigments used for the feathers—ultramarine blue and *ryokushō* green (traditional natural mineral pigments)—are now very expensive, which limits the number of artists who can use them.

The peacock has long been considered an auspicious bird and is often displayed at celebrations and festive occasions. The roses in the background, which bloom throughout the year, symbolize longevity and have traditionally been paired with peacocks in such paintings.

The mounting shows some warping but is made of lustrous, high-quality pure silk with a dignified presence. Unfortunately, since the scroll ends have been replaced, it no longer fits in its original box. Therefore, it will be shipped in a different paulownia wood box that matches the size.

While peacock paintings are not uncommon, we take great care in selecting only the most powerful and exceptional pieces for presentation, and we highly recommend this work.

Mizutani Honen(1879-1928) 　

Born in Nagoya, Japan.
His name is Shokyo. His characters are Heikyo and Hankyo.
Nickname is Chiyokichi.
Studied the Kishi School under Nakashima Yunen, and later under Ishikawa Yurin.
Worshipped Yamamoto Baiitsu and studied his legacy.
