Biography
Kano Kuninobu (?-1840)

A painter of the late Edo period and the 14th generation of the Kano school. He was the son of Tanboku and later adopted by Taishin.
Initially known as Tanshu, he later took the name Yusei.
He upheld the family tradition in painting and was highly skilled.
He was given the rank of Hogen, and passed away in 1840 at the age of 54.

I have previously handled a painting by this artist, which was richly colored and a copy of a model painting used for training by generations of the Kanō school. That piece featured meticulously drawn fine lines and beautifully vivid mineral pigments, applied in thick, precise layers.

Looking at this painting, it is clear that even in ink painting, this artist does not simply rely on the momentum of the brush but carefully adjusts the thickness of the strokes while maintaining overall balance. Just like the vibrantly colored piece, this painting also reflects the artist’s precision and meticulousness.

Unfortunately, the mounting of this painting was remade in the mid-1900s. Had the original mounting remained, it would have enhanced the historical authenticity, but it was likely replaced because it had deteriorated, and the previous owner may have wished to avoid displaying a damaged mounting.

However, the box is a high-quality cedar box crafted by artisans of the time, featuring a sliding lid. It is fortunate that at least this has been preserved.

The details of the person who inscribed the dedication, Minamotono Yu-yo, remain unknown, but they were likely a cultured individual who had a connection with Kuninobu at the time.
