Kobayashi Gokyo (1871-1928)

Japanese painter of the Meiji and Taisho periods.
Born in 1871. Studied under Imao Keinen of the Shijo School.
Formed the Nichigetsu-kai with Okakura Shusui and others in 1900.
He excelled at painting flowers and birds.
Born in Kyoto.

What is particularly noteworthy about this painting is that it is created without using outlines.

While many paintings begin with drawing contours and then adding color within them, this piece is different—it is rendered solely through brush strokes and shading. Achieving this requires the artist to have a clear image in mind before placing the brush on the silk, the skill to execute the brushwork exactly as envisioned, and the ability to anticipate how the pigments or ink will appear once dried. In other words, once the brush touches the surface, there is no room for error—if a mistake is made, it must be redone from the beginning.

Though it is not a flashy painting, it is a work that allows one to appreciate the artist's masterful brush technique.
