This is a work depicting a snowy landscape in sumi ink using only shades of black.
The white areas of the snow are left unpainted, and the snow is expressed by outlining the surrounding areas with light ink wash.
There are a few places in the painting where there were originally tears. When the original owner had the mounting redone, they probably asked the mounting craftsman to make these tear marks as inconspicuous as possible. Although the marks remain, repairs have been made so that the painting will not peel off even if touched with a finger.
Also, perhaps because the original mounting was too damaged to be reused, it was remounted sometime after 1920.
The artist Baiun is by no means famous, but the original owner’s strong attachment to the work is conveyed in their desire to continue appreciating it, even if it meant having the painting remounted.
(There is a slight scent of the original insect-repellent incense, but it is a common smell for hanging scrolls and should not be bothersome.)

Son of Kano Kazunobu.
Records indicate that he was active from around 1795 (Kansei 7) to 1799 (Kansei 11).
His birth and death dates are unknown.
