Biography

Mizutani Honen(1879-1928)

Born in Nagoya, Japan.
His name is Shokyo. His characters are Heikyo and Hankyo.
Nickname is Chiyokichi.
Studied the Kishi School under Nakashima Yunen, and later under Ishikawa Yurin.
Worshipped Yamamoto Baiitsu and studied his legacy.

From the store
Mizutani Honen is renowned for his bird-and-flower paintings, but this peacock painting stands out as his best work that I have seen to date. Peacock paintings are generally time-consuming for any artist to create. Additionally, the use of the natural pigments "Gunjo" for blue and "Ryokusho" for green, which are quite expensive nowadays, limits the number of artists who can afford to use them. Historically, peacocks, considered auspicious birds, have been featured in celebrations and joyous occasions. The roses in the background, blooming throughout the year, have traditionally been paired with peacocks to symbolize longevity. Although the mounting has some warping, it is made of glossy and substantial pure silk. Unfortunately, due to a replacement of the scroll ends, it no longer fits in its original box, hence it will be shipped without the original packaging. While peacock paintings are common, our company is committed to offering carefully selected, impactful artworks, and we highly recommend this piece.
