Biography
Shinozaki Shochiku (1781-1851)
A Confucian scholar and calligrapher of the late Edo period. His original family name was Kato, born in Osaka with roots in Bungo Province. Childhood name was Kingo, personal name Tasuku, courtesy name Shokuhitsu. His art name was Shochiku, with other names including Ido, Nanpo, Joko, Taian, and Saio. Commonly called Chozaemon. He entered the school of Shinozaki Mishima, became his adopted heir, and succeeded the family academy. He studied under Bito Jishu and Koga Seiri and turned to Neo-Confucianism. He excelled in poetry and calligraphy and was widely sought for prefaces and inscriptions to published works. Skilled also in seal engraving, his seals appear in “Koka Inei.” Known for his gentle and sociable character, he became a leading figure in the Kansai cultural world. He recognized and supported Rai Sanyo’s talent and cared for his children after his death, while maintaining intellectual opposition with Oshio Heihachiro. He died in 1851 at the age of 71.
