Yaku: Translation

Living in seclusion by the clear mountain stream, I now pass my idle hours pretending to fish.
Once, Taikōbō cast a straight hook into the water in search of a worthy lord—
but even if I cast such a hook now, I surely would no longer seek such a “fish.”

Painted in June, 1879 (Meiji 12)
At Shinji Kinoene-rō
By Chokunyū, the mountain hermit
