Biography
Takashima Hokkai (1850-1931)

Japanese painter of the Meiji and Taisho periods.
Born in Nagato (Yamaguchi Prefecture) in 1850.
Real name was Tokuzo.
Self-taught in painting from an early age.
Studied at the Ecole des Forestes de Nancy in France.
After returning to Japan, he became a forestry official, but retired in 1899.
Became a mountain painter and won awards at the Tokyo Industrial Exposition and other exhibitions.
He served as a judge for the Bunten Exhibition.
He died in 1931 at the age of 82.
