Biography
Kishinami Ryukei (1854-1935)

A Japanese painter. Born in Tokyo. His first name was Seiji. He studied under Tasaki Souun. He was a member of the Japan Art Academy Association and served as a member and judge of the Japan Southern School of Painting Association. Known as a master of Southern School painting. He passed away in 1935 at the age of 81.

The Japanese cuckoo, or hototogisu, is a common subject in Japanese paintings.

This bird symbolizes early summer (around May to June), and its song is traditionally seen as heralding the arrival of the season. It has been celebrated in many traditional Japanese poems, including waka and haiku. Moreover, its song is often described as "crying out blood," which lends it an association with melancholy and ephemerality in Japanese literature and poetry. Written in kanji as 「時鳥」(literally, "time-telling bird"), the hototogisu is also regarded as an auspicious symbol of good fortune.

The composition of this work features a hototogisu in flight against a background of rain, boldly depicted in light sumi ink. The rain suggests the rainy season from May to June.

The artwork shows some general discoloration over time. There is slight linear staining in the upper left portion of the image and a crease near the artist’s seal. However, there is no significant damage, and these flaws do not detract from its overall visual appeal. The mounting has not been replaced, preserving the original texture and atmosphere of the piece.

Given the simplicity of this theme, it would pair beautifully with seasonal plants or small ornaments for display.
