Art work details
*From the store
This is a remarkably refined painting.
The moon and the cuckoo are rendered with the bare minimum number of brushstrokes.
By lightly shading the surrounding night sky, the artist has depicted the moon in negative space, allowing the original color of the washi paper to serve as the moon itself.
Furthermore, the bird is painted rhythmically without using contour lines, showcasing the artist's practiced and skilled technique.
The surrounding mounting is also of very high quality.
The two strips of fabric closest to the painting, known as ichimonji, along with the two hanging bands called fūtai, are made from a textile known as "Takeyamachi," a top-grade fabric woven with gold thread.
The pattern appears to be autumn grasses, chosen to harmonize with the artwork.
The surrounding gray silk with blue embroidery also contributes to a calm, nighttime ambiance.
Unfortunately, the roller ends have been replaced with modern ones.
The seal reads "Echizen no Kami Gantai," indicating that the work was created after 1836, when Gantai received the title Echizen no Kami.
Originally, the cuckoo is a symbol of summer.
In Japan, it suits display around June, but if interpreted as a "remnant of the departing summer" or a "symbol of transience," it can also be poetically displayed in September, during the time of the harvest moon.
Because it is painted on washi paper, the work makes full use of the "bleeding" and brush marks.
Why not take this opportunity to appreciate the painting techniques of an Edo-period artist?
