Setting weight
This piece weighs 1.25 kg and will be shipped in 100 size.
*From the store
This piece was originally one of a pair. The other one likely depicted "pine and crane."
Together, the two would form a complete set of traditional Japanese symbols of good fortune—pine, bamboo, and plum (shōchikubai), along with crane and tortoise (tsurukame).
Even on its own, the imagery carries auspicious meanings:
The tortoise symbolizes longevity,
bamboo represents resilience, as it remains green even in winter and does not break under snow,
and the plum blossom signifies vitality and elegance, blooming beautifully even amidst snow.
It is a fitting subject for celebrating the New Year or a long life.
The artist, Ando, is a painter who is scarcely known outside his local region. However, one can clearly see from the work that he was a highly skilled artist.
Unfortunately, the original box has been replaced, and the writing once inscribed by the previous owner has been erased. Nevertheless, the box itself is made of old paulownia wood of medium quality.
