The Japanese national flower, the chrysanthemum, and the symbolic rising sun are depicted here.
It is presumed that the work was originally created with a nationalist meaning in mind.
The piece is thought to date from around 1940 (Showa 15).
This is because that year, the Japanese government celebrated the “2600th Anniversary of the Founding of Japan” on a grand scale.
At that time, many painters created works featuring symbolic Japanese motifs such as chrysanthemums, Mount Fuji, and the rising sun.

Nevertheless, the painting itself is rendered with remarkable delicacy, revealing the artist’s considerable skill.
There are some stains scattered in the blank areas of the painting, and there is a repaired tear at the uppermost part on the back side. (These are minor enough not to interfere with appreciation.)
The mounting is original to the period and uses high-quality silk fabric.
However, only the roller ends have been replaced with modern ones.

Of course, each hanging scroll may also be displayed individually.
If you look closely, you will notice that different varieties of chrysanthemums are depicted on the left and right sides, and you can also enjoy appreciating those differences.
