(Explanation of the hanging scroll design) Later Three-Year War,"Gosan-nen no eki"後三年の役

The "Later Three-Year War" was a conflict that occurred from 1083 (Eihō 3) to 1087 (Kanji 1) in the late Heian period. It was a war sparked by an internal dispute within the Kiyohara clan, rulers of the Ōshū region, which saw intervention from Minamoto no Yoshiie, the governor of Mutsu. As a result of this conflict, the Kiyohara clan was obliterated, leading to the rise of the Ōshū Fujiwara clan.

The figure of Yoshiie Hachimantarō watching geese flying in the sky.
Based on the story where Minamoto no Yoshiie (Yoshiie Hachimantarō) led a large army to invade enemy territory, he glanced up at the sky and saw a flock of geese suddenly scatter. Realizing this signified enemy ambushes, Yoshiie took advantage of the situation and achieved a great victory in battle.
