Biography
Nakamura Seikei(1792-1845)

Painter of the late Edo period.
Born in Kansei 4.
Born in a sake brewery in Tsuruga, Echizen (Fukui Prefecture).
According to one theory, his family name was Nishimura.
His name was Motonori. His nickname was Shibun. His alias was Isuke.
At the age of fourteen, he moved to Kyoto and studied under the Kyoto Shijo School painter Matsumura Keibun.
He became one of the four artists under Keibun.
He excelled at painting flowers and birds, and also excelled at painting insects.
Later, he raised many pupils in his hometown.
He died in the 2nd year of the Koka Era at the age of 54.

From the store

Of special note is the artist's painting ability.
I have seen many masters of peacock painting, but there are few who can paint with such precision.
Moreover, he uses only sumi ink, a few color pigments, and gold.
The reason why the dimensions of the hanging scroll are relatively short is because the ceilings of alcoves in the Edo period were lower than those of today.
And the good thing is that although the surface decoration is naturally damaged and stained by the era, it has not been re-tailored with a new surface decoration.
This can be seen from the brownish transparency of the front picture on the Japanese paper on the back side. (See the photo on the back.)
And a good point is that the Ichimonji (the green and gold fabric above and below the painting) still has the very expensive and majestic old fabric intact.
The box is unfortunately not the original box, but has been replaced with a modern box.
The flowers on the back are probably kaidou flowers.
The peacock is a design representing celebration and congratulations.
We hope that you will be able to appreciate the work of Seikei, a nearly unknown but highly respected disciple of Matsumura Keibun, in person.
