*From the store
This is a large horizontal hanging scroll by Raisho.
Raisho occasionally paints such simple pictures. This one depicts nothing more than sparrows and rice ears, yet I can't help but wonder how much training it must have taken him to be able to draw such lines.
The curves and straight lines of the rice stalks, the roundness of the grains, the sparrows' wings and tails—every line seems to be drawn without hesitation.
It also captures the drooping of the rice ears under the weight of the grains, and the subtle bend caused by the sparrows perching on them. The use of blank space is wonderful, and to me it even evokes the feeling of a gentle breeze.

There is an old Japanese poem that goes, "The more the rice ear ripens, the lower it bows."
It means that just as rice plants bow lower the more they ripen, truly great people become more humble, and as a company grows and prospers, both the company and its employees should adopt a more courteous attitude.

Perhaps when Raisho was commissioned to create this piece, the client viewed it as a reminder to remain humble.

The scroll ends and box have been replaced with modern ones. The rest of the mounting is from a later period than when Raisho was alive—estimated to be post-1920.
However, please note that because the box is quite long, it adds to the overall weight, increasing shipping costs by about 7,000 yen when sending to Europe.
