Biography
Dougan (?-?)
・The bio of the author is unknown.
From the store
This is a painting of a hunting hawk from the Edo period. The era is likely from the mid-Edo period to the end of the Edo period.
The details of the artist Dougan are unknown, but it is evident that he had considerable skill, as seen in the intricate depiction of the hawk’s feathers, legs, the wood grain of the perch, and the braided cord.
Unfortunately, the mounting was redone around the mid-1900s. More precisely, the paper material is thick and slightly stiff, suggesting that this painting was not originally created for a hanging scroll but was likely one of several paintings drawn for a folding screen. (For reasons below, it is possible that it was part of a set of three.)
Traditionally, in Korea and Japan, hawk paintings were also believed to serve as talismans against disasters, known as "Sansai Fuseki." The three disasters, caused by fire, water, and wind, were warded off by hanging these talismans on gateposts or walls during the New Year.
These talismans were woodblock prints depicting a hawk with three heads grasping a tiger, accompanied by the characters for "Extinction of the Three Disasters." Because hawks swoop down from the sky to seize animals on the ground, in Korea, they were considered animals that could pick up and carry away the three disasters. Instead of a hawk with three heads, sometimes three hawks were depicted.
In fact, hawks are very timid and difficult to tame. The history of depicting birds of prey used for hunting, like hawks, is long, with many paintings showing hawks perched on a roost. Keeping birds of prey requires a large garden and specialized keepers, making them a symbol of wealth and loved among the nobility.
This hanging scroll includes an accessory called a Futomaki. This is a wooden rod attached to the end of the scroll to thicken it, reducing the number of times the scroll needs to be rolled up, thus preventing wrinkles and folds. Nowadays, good wood is hard to come by, and ordering this alone costs over 10,000 yen.
As a result, the paulownia box is larger and heavier, making the shipping cost higher. (Moreover, the outside of the paulownia box has a sturdy thick paper cover.) However, it shows how much the original owner valued this work, and for the protection of the hanging scroll, there is no better accessory.
Overall, there are traces of the original tears, even in the hawk’s eyes and feathers, but these have been properly glued to the backing paper during the remounting process, so the tears do not catch on your fingers.
