How to roll Futomaki

Hanging scrolls sometimes come with an accessory called a Futomaki(太巻). This is a rod made of wood, attached to the end of the scroll to thicken it, thereby reducing the number of times the scroll needs to be rolled up and preventing wrinkles and folds. Nowadays, good wood is hard to come by, and ordering this alone costs over 10,000 yen.

As a result, the paulownia box becomes larger and heavier, increasing the shipping cost. However, it shows how much the original owner valued the work, and there is no better accessory for protecting the hanging scroll.
