(Explanation of the hanging scroll design) Pine, Bamboo, Plum, Crane and Turtle,"Shochikubai Tsuru,Kame"松竹梅 鶴亀

Cranes and turtles are symbols of longevity and celebration in Japan. The pine tree and bamboo in the background are also often displayed at festive occasions as auspicious plants. In some cases, the plum blossoms in the pine and bamboo set are not painted, but are instead represented by the red colored part of the crane's head.

*Pine tree: An evergreen tree that does not wither in winter and retains its dignified appearance, thus signifying "longevity and prolongation of life.

*Bamboo: Bamboo is hard to break and grows fast, so it was considered a symbol of vitality and growth.

*Plum tree: Plum trees are prized for their beautiful, noble-smelling flowers that bloom in early spring before other flowers, even when the trees are so old that moss has grown on them, and are considered a symbol of nobility and longevity.

The above examples are old Japanese customs, but in other countries they may be appropriate for occasions such as congratulating parents or grandparents or celebrating the New Year.
