*From the store
Chokusui Hirai was a painter from Osaka who is believed to have passed away during the Taishō era (1912–1925). He was particularly skilled in painting peacocks.
This piece is an excellent example of Chokusui’s artistry and allows viewers to fully appreciate his technique.
Merits
- The mineral pigments used in this period were derived from natural sources, resulting in organic and non-artificial coloration. In particular, the blue ultramarine pigment was made from crushed azurite, an expensive material. Similarly, the green pigment, malachite, was derived from natural minerals, offering a refined and subdued beauty.
- The mounting is made of pure silk, and except for the roller ends, the luxurious fabric remains original from that time. The two bands closest to the painting (Ichimonji), the two hanging bands (Futai), and the second-closest brown fabric all feature gold threads. These elements create an elegant atmosphere without being overly flashy.
- Peacocks have traditionally been considered an auspicious subject in art. Additionally, the peonies depicted in the background symbolize celebration, as they are known as the "king of all flowers."
Drawbacks
- The painting has small stains and wrinkles throughout.
- The mounting shows signs of aging, including wrinkles, stains, and discoloration.
- The roller ends have been replaced with modern lacquered ones, creating a slight discrepancy in the sense of historical continuity.
- Due to the replacement of the roller ends, there is no perfectly fitting storage box for the artwork. When shipped, it will be placed in a later-matched box (either a paper box or a paulownia wood box).
