Biography

Imai Keiju (1891-1967)

Studied under Keinen Imao.
His real name is Yasushi. The pseudonym is Kensei-sai.
Excelled at painting flowers and birds.
Died in 1967.

*From the store

A moon floats in a spacious area measuring 51 centimeters in width.
The subject of the painting is solely the moon.
It may not be uncommon for a painting to feature just the moon as its subject.
However, finding such a piece is quite difficult.
This is because most hanging scrolls typically depict two or three subjects together — a combination of landscapes, people, animals, and flowers or birds.

The area around the moon is bordered by a deep, almost black, shade of blue.
There are also three petal-like marks placed with a brush from the center to the lower right of the painting.
It is unclear whether these marks were intentionally drawn by the artist or were caused later by a former owner applying something water-soluble.
(Considering their placement, I believe they were created by the artist.)
These marks resemble leaves dancing in the autumn night breeze under the moon.

Overall, the painting shows slight discoloration, stains, and wrinkles due to age.
However, these do not detract from its appreciation.

Because of its simplicity, this painting enhances the presence of other items displayed alongside it — such as suiseki (viewing stones), plants, or old metal ornaments — creating a story within the space.

The only drawback might be the price.
Since I had to compete with other dealers, the selling price ended up being quite high.
