Biography
Otani Kubutsu (1875-1943)

Otani Kubutsu is a Jodo Shinshu priest and haiku poet.
He is the 23rd abbot of Higashi Honganji temple of the Otani sect of Shinshu. Born in Kyoto.
His posthumous name was Kōen. His Buddhist name was Shaku Shonyo. His haiku is called "Kubutsu.
He studied various styles of calligraphy from childhood, and studied under Sanko Sugiyama.
Studied painting under Bairei Kouno and Seiho Takeuchi.
Studied haiku under Hekigoto Kawahigashi.
He passed away in 1943 at the age of 68.

Otani Kubutsu is the 23rd Dharma Lord of the Otani sect of Shinshu.
He was also a haiku poet and is said to have left some 20,000 haiku during his lifetime.
From an early age, he learned various schools of calligraphy, and studied painting under Bairei Kouno and Seiho Takeuchi.
He studied haiku under Hekigoto Kawahigashi, and was a man of many talents.
In this work, the thick trunk of a dead tree is written with a brush all at once, and the way of painting to make the most of space is like that of his master Takeuchi Seiho.
The surrounding surface is probably Kyoto-style mounting. It is made of fine silk and is very expensive today, making it difficult to order.
The meaning of the haiku is "On a drizzling autumn day, in a rustic mountain village, soybeans are dried on a hasa-kake (a low wooden drying pole used for naturally drying rice).
There is no hasa-kake, rain, or soybeans on the screen. However, the monkey on the tree is probably watching the scene.
Sometimes it is nice to appreciate the work while imagining falling rain and hasa-kake.
