"Rising Sun over Waves" – As a subject for hanging scrolls, this is arguably one of the most frequently depicted themes.
The image of the rising sun symbolizes prosperity, good fortune, auspiciousness, and celebration, and has long been displayed in Japan, especially during New Year festivities.
This particular painting does not feature the stereotypical "bright red sun" but instead opts for a more subdued tone. Golden mud (kin-dei) is used to depict the sunlight overlapping the rising sun. The ink lines of the waves are drawn with practiced brushwork, requiring high skill, as they cannot be redone once applied.
Looking at the mounting, the fabric closest to the painting is embroidered with plum blossoms, symbolizing the New Year, while the next layer features patterns resembling peonies. The top and bottom sections in moss green are embroidered with urajiro (a fern plant traditionally used in New Year’s decorations), helping to create a festive seasonal atmosphere. Each fabric used is of high quality and considered rare today, making it fortunate that the scroll has been preserved as-is, maintaining its historical authenticity.
Although the scroll ends (jikusaki) have been replaced, the vermilion lacquered ends are also antique and harmonize well with the overall age of the piece.
The artist, Bunrin, was a leading figure of the Shijō school from the late Edo to early Meiji period. Among his pupils were Kōno Bairei and Nomura Bunkyō, making Bunrin a foundational figure in the development of the modern Kyoto painting scene.
This work is highly recommended for those seeking a higher-grade Rising Sun piece or wishing to create a refined atmosphere with understated elegance.
