Biography
Tatewaki Taizan (1886-1970)

Born in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.
Real name Teiichi.
Studied Japanese painting at Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts (now Kyoto City University of Arts).
Later studied under Takeuchi Seiho.
His paintings were selected for the Bunten and Teiten Exhibitions.
After the war, he served as chairman of the Hyogo Prefecture Japanese Painters Association.
He died in 1970 at the age of 84.

This artwork depicts fireflies, a quintessential symbol of early summer in Japan.

Upon closer inspection, one firefly can be seen in the lower part of the painting, another slightly above and to the right, and a third one subtly hidden among the leaves in the upper left.

The bamboo leaves are rendered in varying shades of ink wash, and the scattered white dots on them likely represent dewdrops. Given that Japan experiences its rainy season from June to July, the artist may have intended to capture a scene after the rain. Alternatively, it could depict a nighttime scene around 9 PM, when fireflies glow amidst the night dew.

The embroidery on the blue border of the mounting features a peony pattern. Since peonies bloom around June, this choice reflects the refined sensibility of the artisan who designed the mounting.

There is some natural aging and minor stains visible throughout the piece, but they do not detract from its appreciation. However, there is a slight crease at the bottom of the mounting.

This artwork beautifully showcases Taizan’s mastery of ink painting.
