A word from the store,
Otsu-e were souvenir paintings sold to travelers in the Otsu area along the Tokaido Highway during the Edo period.
At that time, stores specializing in Otsu-e were lined up along the highway, which was crowded with travelers.
However, with the construction of railroads in the Meiji period (1868-1912) and the Tokaido Highway's role as a highway coming to an end, stores selling Otsu-e gradually disappeared.
Later, Otsu-e became a collectible item for painters and collectors such as Tomioka Tessai and Asai Chu. One of the most enthusiastic collectors and investigators was the folk art activist Yanagi Muneyoshi.
Yanagi Muneyoshi classified the production period of Otsu-e as follows.
Oldest Otsu-e (1596-1660)
Early Otsu-e (1661-1715)
Middle Otsu-e (1726-1803)
Late Otsu-e (1804-)
Early and middle period works can be identified by the size of the paper on which they are painted.
After the early period, many of the works of the middle period Otsu-e were made with two vertically spliced sheets of hanshi (half-sheet paper).
As the period progressed, the size of the paper changed to a single sheet of hanshi (half-size paper) for smaller screens.
This work also has two sheets of hanshi joined in the middle, indicating that it was created around the 18th century.
The title of the painting, "Falconer," depicts a young man standing with a hawk in his left hand.
The combination of a beautiful boy and a hawk has been popular since those days, and has the meaning of accomplishment of the five grains and the return of lost items to one's possession.
There is an original tear mark in the upper left corner of the screen, as well as some foxing and staining, but this is a valuable work of art.
