*From the store

This is a work painted in monochrome ink depicting white lotuses in the rain.
Since lotuses bloom from July to August, they are often displayed as summer scrolls (natsugake) in the alcove of a traditional Japanese room. However, there is another meaning as well. Around August 15, Japan observes Obon—a Buddhist event during which the spirits of ancestors are believed to return home and are welcomed and honored. At that time, lotus paintings are also displayed for their Buddhist significance.

The lotus, blooming pure and radiant even as it rises from the mud, symbolizes the idea of “maintaining a pure heart despite worldly desires,” carrying meanings such as purity, purification, salvation, and rebirth.

In this work, the background is brushed diagonally downward in ink to represent “wind and rain,” further highlighting the purity of the white lotus blooming in harsh conditions.

There is some lifting on the back of the mounting, but it does not affect appreciation from the front.
As for the storage box, the original one is missing, so it comes with a different box that fits the size.
