Main Meaning
The "Chrysanthemum Child" is a legend set in China during the Zhou dynasty (1046-256 B.C.).
The king's favorite child, Jidou, accidentally stepped over the king's pillow.
This is a serious crime that would normally be punishable by death.
However, the king, wishing to save the child, had him exiled to a remote mountainous region.
Jidou was left alone in the mountains, holding a pillow given to him by the king as a memento.

Seven hundred years later, during the reign of Emperor Wen of the Wei Dynasty.
The emperor wondered about the mysterious medicine water flowing from a remote mountain, and sent an imperial envoy to find the source of the water.
There, the envoys saw a hermitage standing quietly amidst the blooming chrysanthemums.
In the hermitage, there was a weeping child.
This child was the Jidou of 700 years ago.

The child had written the Lotus Sutra on a chrysanthemum leaf, which was attached to his pillow, and had attained immortality through the spiritual power of the dew that fell from the chrysanthemum leaf.
The Jidou praised the merits of the Lotus Sutra and began to dance gracefully.
Then, praying for the longevity of the reign of the sovereign, he offered this strange message to the imperial envoy and returned to his former hermitage.

Biography
Makita Tanemaro (1834-1908)

1835 (Tempo 5) - 1908 (Meiji 41)
Studied under Tosa Mitsufumi. One of the leading Tosa School painters in Gifu Prefecture.
The pseudonym is Inenoya.
His works are few and far between, and the details of his work have not been revealed.
Makita Tanemaro worked for a long time in Gifu, and died in 1908.
