*From the store

This is a tiger painting by the artist Miki Kōzan, who studied under Ganku.
In this period, people in Japan had never actually seen real tigers, so they were often depicted using cats as models, as seen here.
It is a so-called “Kishi school” tiger, painted using brush techniques passed down from his teacher, Ganku.
The mounting has been remade at a later date.
At a time when ceilings were still low and the alcoves (tokonoma) in ordinary homes were small, a work of this size was likely commissioned by an upper-class household.
