Rats and daikon radishes.

In Japanese mythology, the god Ōkuninushi (Ōkuninushi-no-Mikoto) faced several life-threatening trials when seeking to marry the daughter of the storm god, Susanoo. In one trial, he was trapped in a burning field, and a mouse saved his life by guiding him into a hole in the ground and even brought back an arrow he needed. Because of this, mice came to be seen as his protectors or helpers.

Later, the name “Daikoku” (an alternative reading of Ōkuninushi’s name meaning “Great Country”) was pronounced the same as “Daikokuten,” a Buddhist deity derived from the Hindu god Shiva (as Mahākāla). As Buddhism spread through Japan, Daikokuten evolved into a god of wealth and good fortune, and the mouse was adopted as his divine messenger.

Furthermore, the word “daikon” (a large white radish) sounds similar to “Daikoku” in Japanese. This phonetic similarity led to the daikon also being treated as a lucky item, often pictured alongside Daikokuten and the mouse. Thus, the pairing of mice and daikon became a unique symbol of fortune in Japanese culture, blending mythology, religion, and wordplay.
