【Biography】
Kato Sesso (1872-1918)

1872 (Meiji 5) - 1918 (Taisho 7)

Born in Honjo City, Akita Prefecture.
His first name was Tatsuya. His pseudonym was Bunkyo.
The pseudonym is Sesso,Zoro-ken,Tatsubunkyo.
Studied painting under Komuro Hidetoshi at the age of 10.
Studied calligraphy under Okoshi Kanseki.
In 1896, studied under Hashimoto Gaho.
Awarded many prizes at exhibitions(Kyoshinkai).
In later years, he went to Manpuku-ji Temple of the Őbaku sect of Zen Buddhism, and left behind many works in the Őbaku style.
After the death of his master, Gaho, he returned to Sakata (Yamagata Prefecture) to pursue his painting career.
He died in 1918 at the age of 47.

【Main Meaning】
Two legendary poet-monks of Tang Dynasty, China. Both of them are said to have transcended the mundane world with their many eccentricities, and to have written many poems. The image of Kanzan opening a sutra scroll and Jittoku holding a broom is the subject of a Zen painting.
