Biography
Obatake Shokoku (1885-1942)
Born in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture. He developed a love for painting in his youth under his father's influence. In 1907, he aspired to be a painter and studied under Suzuki Shonen in Kyoto. Later, he moved to Tokyo, where he worked for about ten years. Following his father's illness, he returned to his hometown of Tottori and dedicated himself to painting there for about 20 years. He passed away at the age of 58.
From the store
The artist of this piece is relatively unknown. However, the painting exudes a sense of simplicity and warmth. This is likely due to the fact that it is rendered on washi (Japanese paper), which allows the nuances of ink shading and gradation to stand out more vividly. Japanese paintings are traditionally created on either silk or washi, with silk lending a sharper impression. In contrast, washi enhances the blurring effects of ink, often producing an element of accidental beauty. (Of course, the artist is well-versed in controlling the spread of ink on washi.)
The surrounding mounting features a brown pattern with embroidered green maple leaves. (Given that the painting depicts a cuckoo, a motif associated with early summer, it is reasonable to assume the leaves are green rather than autumnal red maple.)
The shaft ends of the mounting are lacquered, adding a distinct accent to the overall presentation.
