From the store

This is a work with a well-balanced sense of era between its content and mounting.

Edo-period works are often found with aged content but with outer mounting replaced in later periods (such as the Showa era). When this happens, the mismatch in the sense of era between the artwork and its mounting diminishes the charm of the antique painting.

The mounting of this work appears old and is estimated to be from the late Edo to Meiji period. There are several traces of worm damage on both the mounting and the artwork itself. At some point in the past, the innermost washi paper backing was likely replaced to fill in these wormholes. However, since the outer surface retains the original mounting fabric, the sense of era remains consistent with the artwork, allowing the piece to be appreciated without any visual discord.

Nowadays, there are almost no mounting artisans capable of crafting such aged mountings. Another noteworthy aspect is the use of old ox bone for the roller ends, which adds to its aesthetic value.

Unfortunately, the artwork originally had several wormholes (please refer to the images). However, since the backing paper was replaced long ago, this does not significantly detract from its appreciation.

The box is not the original but was replaced with one from the Showa period.

The artist, Okajima Rinsai, was a Kano school painter who interacted with the first-generation Utagawa Hiroshige. While not widely known, this work allows one to appreciate the ink painting style of the Kano school.
