【Biography】
Suzuki Kason (1860-1919)

Japanese painter active during the Meiji and Taisho periods.
Born in 1860 in Shitaya, Edo.
His first name was Shigeo. Also known as Sotaro.
The pseudonym is Kason,Gyoyu,Ninsei.
Studied under Nakajima Kohsai and Kikuchi Yosai.
In 1877 (Meiji 10), he joined the Kiritsu Kosho Company. He worked as a designer of ceramics and lacquerware.
In 1889, he became a teacher in charge of painting and design at the Ishikawa Industrial School.
In 1900, he exhibited his work at the Paris World Exposition and was awarded a bronze medal.
In 1901, he won the silver medal for "Peony Sleeping Cat" at the 5th In-ten Exhibition in the spring of 1901.
In the 43rd year of the Meiji Era (1910), he exhibited "Crossing the River in the Rain" at the Japan-British Exposition and was awarded the Gold Medal.
In the early 20th century, he was regarded in Europe as the best known Japanese painter since Hokusai.
He died in 1919 at the age of 59.
