Biography
Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1888)
Swordsman and bureaucrat of the late Edo and Meiji periods.
Born in Edo in Tempo 7.
His real family name was Ono. His first name was Takayuki.His nickname was Koya, Mouko.
His alias is Tetsutaro. The pseudonym is Ichirakusai.
He learned swordsmanship from Chiba Shusaku and taught at the Bakufu Kobusho.
During the Boshin War, he met Saigo Takamori as an emissary of Katsu Kaishu, and paved the way for the "Katsu-Saigo talks" that led to the opening of the Edo Castle.
After the Meiji Restoration, he served as the Grand Counsellor of the Shizuoka Domain, the Counsellor of Ibaraki Prefecture, and the attendant to the Emperor Meiji.
In 1880, he established Itto Shoden Muto-ryu.
Together with Kaishu Katsu and Deishu Takahashi, he was known as one of the "Three Ships of the Last Days of the Tokugawa Shogunate(Bakumatsu-sanshu)".
He died in 1888 at the age of 53.
