A word from the store
This is a large hanging scroll.
The front cover shows signs of age, including foxing, staining, wrinkling, and damage.
However, the inside of the painting does not have any noticeable damage.
We do not know the details of the artist, but from the way he painted this carp, we think he was a painter specializing in carp in the Inaba(因幡) area (present-day Tottori Prefecture) around the early 1900s.
The slightly protruding mouth of the carp, the sharp angles of the pectoral and dorsal fins, and the way the shading of the sumi ink is emphasized are characteristic of painters active in the Inaba area in the 19th century, such as Kuroda Toko (黒田稲皐1787-1846) and Obata Tosho (小畑稲升1812-1886), who are known for their mastery of carp painting.
Such carp paintings are commonly known as "Inaba-goi(因幡鯉).
This painter seems to be one of those who followed in their footsteps.
Although there is a wide range of his works, the overall atmosphere is quiet, so we recommend it when you want to enjoy a calm atmosphere.
The swimming carp has no particular season and can be hung all year round.
